Factions has been dormant for a while, because I just have not been able to make the time to commit to running the previously planned twelfth arc, Ysantis. But I have been missing Factions—the weird matchups, the thrown-together lore, and the community. So, after some discussion on Discord, I’ve come up with a more modest plan for moving forward. That plan is essentially “Melee” or “free-for-all” mode, which I’m making into the default form of Factions, replacing the complex and demanding formal arc structure as its center.
To start with, I’m going to commit to 2 PM Pacific on Saturdays and Sundays, starting next weekend, as match organizing times. I’ll show up on Discord and in League at those times to set up matches, and see if there’s interest. If there is, I plan to put together lore and Herald updates based on the BoP as we go. I’ll try to do a Reddit post or two and otherwise spread the word, and invite others to do the same.
The above is, of course, all I originally intended Factions to be. Then it sort of exploded into this massive thing, in good and bad ways. We’ll see if that happens again, and if it does, maybe we can use that additional interest to gather up enough volunteers to add to the basic structure. To begin with, the Ysantis arc could be introduced as a special event overlaid on top of the standard mode. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself, nor to imply that “Factions getting huge again” means “success”, and that not happening means “failure”. I think it’s fair to say that one of the lessons I’ve learned over the past few years is that bigger is not necessarily better. Expansion can, indeed, bring the whole thing grinding to a halt. If Factions just stays as a small community that occasionally does matches on weekends, and that community has fun doing that, then I consider this a success.
Anyway, hoping to see some of you on the Fields soon! I’ll be on Discord periodically this week, as we try to figure out some specifics. I’ll also be cleaning up the website to reflect this new, simpler focus.
